Overview

The Citizen Science Projects Grant supports participatory scientific initiatives that enable members of the public to actively contribute to scientific research through data collection, observation, monitoring, documentation, and other research activities conducted under appropriate scientific supervision.

 

By supporting the generation of reliable and locally relevant data, Citizen Science initiatives contribute to expanding national knowledge, strengthening evidence-based decision-making, and fostering greater public appreciation of science and technology.

 

The grant aligns with KFAS's strategic priorities by encouraging collaboration among research institutions, educational entities, civil society organizations, and local communities to address scientific and societal challenges relevant to the State of Kuwait.

 

KFAS priority areas include:

  • Environment  

  • Health  

  • Water and Food Security 

  • Energy  

  • STEAM Education 

  • Future Economies and Innovation 

 

Target Audience

Eligible applicants and participants may include:

  • Students (8–18 years old) 

  • University students 

  • Youth, volunteers, and science enthusiasts 

  • Families and community members 

  • Teachers and STEAM educators 

  • Civil society organizations, including science-based community groups such as diving clubs, astronomy clubs, and nature groups 

  • Schools and educational institutions 

Specific eligibility requirements may vary depending on the nature of the proposed initiative. Applicants are encouraged to review the application guidelines before submission.

 

Required Application Documents

At the Time of Application

  • Project proposal (using the approved template) 

  • Letter signed by the head of the applicant organization confirming institutional support for the project 

  • Detailed curriculum vitae (CVs) of the project team 

 

Post-Project Documentation

  • Invoices related to supported expenses 

  • Final report summarizing the project's objectives and outcomes 

  • Attendance sheet 

  • Project outputs, datasets, publications, or other supporting documentation, where applicable 

 

Geographic Scope

Citizen Science projects may be implemented across various environments within the State of Kuwait, including:

  • Marine environments 

  • Desert environments 

  • Urban environments 

  • Protected areas and natural reserves 

  • Educational institutions 

  • KFAS subsidiaries 

Implementation locations should be appropriate to the objectives and scientific design of the proposed initiative.

 

Expected Reach

The expected reach of Citizen Science initiatives depends on:

  • Project duration 

  • Scale of public participation and engagement 

  • Applicable approval and funding cycle 

 

Evaluation Criteria

Citizen Science Project applications are evaluated through a structured and competitive review process.

Applications are assessed based on:

  • Alignment with KFAS strategic priorities 

  • Scientific merit of the proposed initiative 

  • Quality of the methodology and implementation approach 

  • Expected quality and reliability of the data 

  • Level of public participation and engagement 

  • Capacity building and knowledge transfer 

  • Institutional capacity to implement the project 

  • Expected impact and sustainability 

  • Public value and contribution to science engagement 

Meeting the eligibility or evaluation criteria does not guarantee funding.

 

Application Process

Applications follow KFAS's standard grant review process:

  1. Application Submission 

  2. Administrative Review 

  3. Technical and Programmatic Evaluation 

  4. Final Decision and Applicant Notification 

 

Only applications that successfully complete all review stages may proceed to approval and implementation.

 

Governance and Compliance

All Citizen Science Projects are subject to KFAS's applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Approved grantees are expected to comply with monitoring, reporting, documentation, and evaluation requirements applicable to the grant.

KFAS applies measures to ensure integrity, transparency, impartiality, and the avoidance of conflicts of interest throughout the application, evaluation, and decision-making processes.
